Objectives/Work Plan

In 2008, the focus of RAB’s work is to deliver advice to the Secretary of State, BERR, on delivery of the UK’s share of the EU target for 20% renewable energy by 2020. In order to provide comprehensive, but targeted advice, RAB has established eight workstreams to supervise the delivery of defined tasks.

Task 20 Sustainability issues and market competition
Activity:

1) RAB will complete a review of the current position on biomass (waste wood/co-products) quality compliance and assurance, and associated sustainability issues.

2) The Group will then hold a one day meeting on the basis of the Chatham House rule, with the goal of producing a set of recommendations to RAB, which in turn will debate them and submit approved recommendations to BERR.

The core aspect of this Task is to develop quality assurance systems that are acceptable to stakeholders such that the waste wood and other similar materials can be accessed for energy production.

A follow-on project might be an assessment of the feedstock requirements implied by the 2020 deployment projections, the likely sources for these (and competition for them), the barriers to achieving sufficient supply and the implications for the Government’s renewables strategy.
